I grew up in California with a passion for sports–particularly soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, pickleball, and golf. After earning a bachelor’s degree, I shifted my focus to prioritize my family, teaching career, and continued academic achievements at the expense of my physical health. Between degrees I pursued different hobbies such as competitive cycling, mixed marital arts, and running to try to regain some of my former fitness, but nothing seemed sustainable and injuries derailed my interest in those endeavors.
While visiting with my extended family, I noticed the dire state of their physical health. Obesity, cancer, heart problems, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes were rampant, with one exception: my then-95-year-old grandfather, who was in better condition than every other family member over 55. His secret? He still went to the gym to lift weights four times a week, along with a day or two of relatively intense cardio. (At 98, he still push-mows his quarter-acre lawn.) He is still able to care for himself, while others were on the path to hospice care, assisted living, and similar challenges. I started looking for a fitness option that would mirror those results and fit my busy schedule. I soon found CrossFit and have reaped the benefits ever since. I've found the motto "Excellence through effort" to be true by consistently showing up, scaling as necessary, and setting small but measurable goals for growth.
I originally came to CrossFit for the physical health benefits and motivating coaches, but it quickly became so much more. I've learned that then benefits of CrossFit extend to our social, emotional, and mental well-being. I’m passionate about maintaining a positive gym environment—one that starts with striving to see each individual, prioritizing safety, and supporting gradual, sustainable progress. I love when an athlete crushes a new PR and the gym erupts in cheers of support. It’s a privilege to work out together and be part of such a vibrant, empowering community.
